Green Activism: The world is changing while we sleep

— Pratima H

You can’t exactly call them crusaders or activists. They don’t need that attention anyways. Like humor, good work too can be dissected like a frog, but then it dies in the process.

Perhaps a reason why some of these gypsies are breaking the moulds we have been living in.

They remind us well of what another maverick John Lennon noted well – it’s weird not to be weird!MarkBoyle(tea)Cropped

So that’s how you have a man who has been living without the concept of currency or money for quite some time now, and happily enough.

Then there are girls who are dumping branded shampoo-bottles and are experimenting bravely with baking powder instead.

And then there are boys who are living in a self-made bus.

Lauren is on a mission of practicing sustainability in her own small ways to treat her body holistically. She underlines how her natural hair care  journey has been a long and adventurous one, as she tried the No Poo Method, then Honey Shampoo, then ACV rinsing and has actually gone more than a year without purchasing shampoo.

Her discovery so far shows that 100% raw hair care products do meet her holistic philosophy.

Allyson, another woman on a green mission, who is also a homemaker, has also been experimenting with such ideas with bravo. She writes is her blog: “I didn’t expect it to go on so long. It is now over a year later and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to using shampoo. There just isn’t any reason to. My husband and two kids also are completely shampoo free. For someone as skeptical as my husband was about this experiment, this says a lot. My husband in particular always battled dandruff and used special dandruff shampoos but now he doesn’t have a problem with it anymore.”

hank-bought-a-bus-yatzer-14On the other end of the spectrum is Mark Boyle, now christened as ‘Moneyless Man’ with adoration, who is working on the agenda of Freeconomy community for quite some time. As to his work, it has been observed that the ‘Moneyless Manifesto’ explores why making the transition beyond monetary economics is becoming the zeitgeist of the Occupy generation, and how you can participate in the world’s only booming economy – the gift economy. Mark has lived completely without money in England for two and a half years, an experience which formed the basis for his first book, The Moneyless Man. He is currently in the process of creating a fully localised, land-based gift economy in Éire which will demonstrate how all the ideas and practical solutions described in The Moneyless Manifesto can be integrated into one holistic system design.

And of course, how can we not mention, when Hank Bought A Bus! This fellow has created a different, adventurous story of living on the road with his popular bus experiment. He reflects on his blog: “In architecture school I was tired of drawing buildings that would never exist, for clients that were imaginary, and with details I didn’t fully understand. I prefer to work with my hands, exploring details thoroughly, and enjoy working/prototyping at full scale. So for my Masters Final Project I decided to buy a school bus and convert it into a tiny living space.”

So there they are, around you but not co-ercing you for anything. Join this rare tribe and enjoy discovering life on your own route.
